The 320-page book is both a comprehensive guide and a showcase of location drawings that displays the works of 100 artists, designers, illustrators and architects from 50 cities and 30 countries who act as visual correspondents with their on-site drawings and paintings. The Art of Urban Sketching offers a visually arresting, storytelling take on urban life from different cultures and artistic styles, as well as insight into various drawing techniques and mediums.

Fred’s work features drawings from his trip to Viterbo, Italy, where he teaches Montserrat’s study abroad summer program. Each July, Montserrat hosts a four-week residential program affording art students and enthusiasts a unique opportunity to live and study in a country famous for its rich cultural legacy. Fred teaches Journalistic Drawing in Italy where students develop a series of on-site drawings in a sketchbook journal, based directly on their experiences living and traveling in Italy.
Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Marjorie Augenbraum was asked again this year to be one of the judges for St. Mary’s Star of the Sea’s (in Beverly) 15th annual Culturama event. The event is a school tradition where 7th and 8th graders choose a topic of interest from various subjects, write an 8 page research paper, prepare a 5 minute speech, design a tri-fold poster, and create a 3-D presentation. Community members from assorted professional backgrounds were chosen to judge the student’s work. The students, staff, faculty and community at St. Mary’s came together to celebrate the academic achievement of their students work that they had been creating since September, 2011!

“This was the second year I was one of the judges, and once again I was impressed by the students,” said Augenbraum.

Judging by the quality of the student’s posters and 3-D visual aids, it is evident that there are strict and rigorous guidelines for the projects. Augenbraum found that the students were articulate and showed a high degree of curiosity and interest in the subject he or she had chosen. There was a wide range of subject matter. Among the students she spoke with, there was a thorough presentation on bottlenose dolphins, a survey of the founding and films of Pixar, and an investigation of medical research being conducted on sea creatures. Event Coordinator Evangeline Egizi‘s son Dante presented his Culturama project on Doomsday, 2012. A student who presented a fascinating study into the truth about energy drinks told Augenbraum that her level of consumption and that of a friend had changed as a direct result of her new knowledge!

Visit the NK Gallery site for more information.

Agglomeration merges MacNaught and Bufenmeyer’s individuality to create something bigger than themselves as a collaborative experiment to see what combining two different approaches to image making would yield.

McNaught’s work has been focused on formal issues of image making using strategies similar to game playing as building blocks to tap into her creativity. Her tightly planned structures using repetitive pattern, mark making, and shapes result in a complexity that creates a dynamic geometry that takes on a life of its own.

Assoc. Prof. Erin Dionne was featured in The Boston Globe West for her most recent novel Notes from an Accidental Band Geek!

Erin Dionne, Framingham (preteen novelist)
Notes from an Accidental Band Geek

What led up to this book: ‘‘I participated in marching band in high school and at Boston College. Being part of a school marching band is a bizarre experience that a lot of people don’t know about. After my first two books sold, my former editor said she would love it if someone wrote a novel set amidst a school marching band. While this book includes a lot of the experiences I had as part of a band, including marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, which we did while I was at BC, it’s not a story about me. I played piccolo and flute; my main character plays brass. She’s standoffish and prickly and snobbish; I am not.’’

What’s in store for 2012: Dionne’s first project is to deliver her second child, due this month. After that, she’ll be completing her next age-group novel, scheduled for publication in 2013.
