A day that touched a generation

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Amy Brown, of Chelmsford, was sketching in class during her first week at the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly when the terrorist attacks came. "Art helped us deal with what we were feeling," she said. Now an art teacher at the Hemenway Elementary School in Framingham, she holds some of her students' drawings thanking those who serve in the military. SUN / JULIA MALAKIE

Alumna Amy Brown ’05, was recently featured in an article in “The Lowell Sun” in a story about her memories of September 11, 2001 when she was a freshman at Montserrat College of Art. Brown is working as an art teacher in Framingham.

Amy Brown was a college freshman, sketching in art class. Michael Gendron was in a high-school cafeteria and Heather Makrez was slogging through sociology when her teacher got a message and quickly switched on the TV. Read more…

Updates from Margaurita Spear!

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Alumna Margaurita Spear sends us the following updates:

“May 19th: At the final North Shore Art Teachers Association meeting for the 2010/2011 school year, I will be presenting a workshop for art educators on the topic of Mosaics. This workshop is meant to provide art teachers with a wealth of possibilities for incorporating the study of mosaics at any age level. In addition to providing lesson plans and examples, this workshop also gives teachers the information needed to pursue mosaics for their own pleasure.

“May 20th: I have been invited to be a guest teacher at the Bell School’s Fine Arts Day in Marblehead. At the event I will be teaching four kindergarten art classes where the students will make clay birds accompanied by hand-crafted birdhouses.

“May 22nd: On this Sunday there will be the Third Annual Sacred Art Show at Holy Family Church in Lynn, MA. This will be my third year volunteering in the capacity of art director and developing art lessons that coincide with the weekly gospel curriculum. The students’ artwork will be on display for one day only. A press release is expected to appear in the Lynn Item some time this week, so keep an eye out for it. Here is the press picture of two of the first grade students holding the birds that they made — these are the same birds that the kindergarten classes will be making at the Bell School.

“And in July…
I will be returning for my third summer as an art teacher at the Arts At Tower summer program at the Tower School in Marblehead. In the past two summers I have taught mosaics, puppet making, painting, paper mache and paper sculpture, and stamp design, among other courses. This summer’s courses have yet to be established.”
