2010 S&R Washington Award

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

The S&R Foundation is seeking candidates for its 2010 S&R Washington Award.  I am writing to ask if you would please encourage any talented young musicians or artists you know to consider applying for the Award.

Attached please find the Washington Award Flyer that you can forward to those you believe would qualify.   Please also visit the Foundation’s webpage atwww.sandr.org

The S&R Foundation grants the Washington Award to young artists in the fields of music, fine arts, drama, dance, photography, and film who have not attained an advanced level of recognition in their artistic discipline in the United States or Japan.  Awardees receive a $5,000 cash prize.

The Award is especially intended to encourage those artists whose activities take place in the United States and Japan, or whose specialties contribute to mutual understanding between the two countries.

The deadline for applications is October 1. 2010.

Any help you can provide in increasing awareness of the Washington Award among young talented artists would be greatly appreciated.  For further details please email washingtonaward@sandr.org or call the Foundation Office at 240-223-0630

The Beverly Arts Festival is proud to announce a new feature to its celebration of art and culture. This year, The Writers Studio on Cabot Street, hosted by Montserrat College of Art, will feature events throughout the day to support and celebrate the writing community in Beverly.  With events scheduled every hour for children and adults, there’s something for everyone.

Date and Time: Saturday, June 19th, 2010 10am – 4pm

Location: Montserrat College of Art Academic Classroom, 238 Cabot Street

10 a.m. Tony Toledo‘s joining-in tales for the whole family. Beverly storyteller Tony Toledo is 52 years old but reads at a 63-year-old level.

10:30 a.m.  “Poetry Rocks!” Stop by the Writers Studio for a poetry-building activity that’s fun for all ages.

11 a.m. Reading & Workshop with Children’s Book Author Erin Dionne. Montserrat Faculty member Erin Dionne will read from her new novel, THE TOTAL TRAGEDY OF A GIRL NAMED HAMLET and run a writing workshop for kids and adults, ages 8 and up.

Noon Videos – Screenings of short films made by local artists.

1 p.m.  Sean Devlin, playwright, novelist, community organizer, and founder of Beverly’s Trashfinders’ Ball will be reading from his newest work in progress.

1:30 p.m. Beverly writer and Montserrat faculty member Dawn Paul will read from and discuss her new novel, The Country of Loneliness. In the novel, Paul imagines the boyhood and youth of her father, a silent and troubled war veteran whose early death deprived them both of any chance for understanding. The novel richly portrays a time, the early 1930s, and characters shaped by the events of that time, the Great Depression and the years leading to World War II.

2 p.m. Poetry Reading featuring Kevin Carey, Jennifer Jean, Montserrat Writing Center Director Colleen Michaels, Jan O’Neil and J.D. Scrimgeour

3 p.m. Student Poetry Showcase: Erik Lomen, Amy Moore, Grant Archer, Shari Caplan, and Steph DeOrio, members of the creative writing programs at Montserrat and Salem State.

3: 30 p.m. Open Mic with Judith Shimer and her Ukulele.  Join in! Contact Colleen Michaels at cmichaels@montserrat.edu to sign up.

Stop by anytime during the day to check out video installations from members of the Salem Writers Group and paintings by Montserrat alumnus, Erik Lomen ’10.

Please visit Art Throb for more information on the Writers Studio.
