Paris – Minnesota comes to Beverly, MA

Monday, September 21st, 2009

If you are familiar with Alec Soth’s work, you should know exactly what Paris-Minnesota is. Meanwhile, if you are not familiar with Montserrat College of Art, you will never guess where Beverly, MA is. But that doesn’t really matter because Alec Soth is showing his work at the Montserrat Gallery this summer. A combination of Fashion Magazine and people from his home town all together to create one, if not the best, of his work. His influences are Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Stephen Shore. Here is a quote from Soth: “I fell in love with the process of taking pictures, with wandering around finding things. To me it feels like a kind of performance. The picture is a document of that performance.”

So, if you are around Beverly, MA during the spring of 2010, stop by the Montserrat Gallery and see one of the most complex and conceptual photo shows put together and if you are not around, well start driving because you will regret it if you miss the show.

Daniel Phillips at 301 Gallery

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

My first experience as a gallery assistant was working in the 301 Gallery with artist Daniel Phillips on his current exhibition, Tear Down These Walls. Having only read a little information about his current show, I didn’t really know what to expect on my first shift.

When I began working with Daniel I began to realize how much of this current show is actually performance art. The work he was doing was physical and time consuming, It showed to me how dedicated he was to his art. Along with his still photographs turned into stop motion video of him doing his current work was another aspect of the show that I found very interesting. I taught it was a great and different way to document the progress of his work. Since I never really witnessed performance art of this kind I found this new experience to be very exciting, and to work along side an artist, helping him in any way with his art was very rewarding.

Paper Girl Northampton

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

What a blast it was Friday night in Northampton, MA! The Paper Girl Northampton Project held its gala closing exhibition (and party) at Thorne’s Market, the night before the big art giveaway. (To read more about the project, go to www.papergirlnorthampton.com, or check it out on Facebook.) According to one of the leaders of the pack, Adam Kology, they received approximately 300 pieces of art. The exhibition revealed a range of media, and impressively high quality. Artists came from all over, both local and distant, and Montserrat was well-represented. The same can be said of the attendees at the party: Adam Kology, Katherine Romansky and Eben Kling, (The Paper Girl Northampton organizers), Lillian Harden, Brendan McCauley, Caitie Vale, Jeff Havens, Adria Sutter, Justin Durand, Ashley Brown, Steve Trevathan, Chelsea Sams, Chris Stepler, Emily Pardoe, Cape musicians (soon to be Northampton residents) Mike Gundlach and Rob Toher-Rob in the DJ role, making sure the music was cranked. And, of course, major supporter and videographer, Ethan Berry. Katherine’s father was amazed at the number of Montserrat friends there, including the Beverly contingent who drove through the rain at breakneck speed to make it on time, and made the return trip later that night. Saturday was the art giveaway, and we’re hoping it was as much fun as the rest of it. Well done, everybody.
