Tribute to Michael Jackson

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Pre-College students used their creative talents and decorated a glove on Tuesday night while watching the Tribute to Michael Jackson – “King of Pop”. This group got a little carried away and glued the glove to their hands.  You’ll know who they are when you see them.

Fundraising Success!

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Thanks to all of our generous donors in our wonderful community, the college was able to bring in $50,000 in the last few weeks of June to double this amount with an exceptional matching gift from an anonymous donor. That means we add $100,000 to the annual fund at year-end! We are so thankful to members of our community for once again stepping up and showing their support for Montserrat students. All annual fund dollars go toward student scholarship for the 95% of our students who require aid to complete their college educations. Thanks to one and all!

Orientation 2009

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Orientation 2009 runs from Saturday, August 22 to Tuesday, August 25.  This is a chance to meet your new home and school. During this time we will help you become acclimated to the unique culture that we call Montserrat. A group of current students and myself will be here to help you wrap your head around what is in your near future.

Some of the things you will encounter at Orientation are:

  • What makes Montserrat what it is?
  • What is a “Mighty Throwdown” and how does it work?
  • How to balance your work load and have a life?
  • Who is that person I’m living with?
  • What is the Bear Gallery?
  • Surviving art history?
  • Late night breakfast?

This is a small sampling for the schedule of events that we will be covering. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at lthomas-vickory@montserrat.edu or (978)921-4242, x 1201. I look forward to meeting you in the upcoming weeks.

Other Stuff on Campus

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

As a part of your time here at Montserrat we have several programs run through the Office of Student Services. At first sight, they may appear to be similar to clubs and activities that many other colleges have. However, they are unique to our institution and designed and maintained by the students. We help by providing the avenues, and then the students take over and make the programs and activities what they want them to be. Here are some examples of what our students have created over the past few years:

Student Voice: This is our variant of a student government. Student Voice is an open group of students who volunteer their time to represent their interests. We have no elections or appointed leaders. Meetings function by open dialogue and focus on issues and ideas that are important to the students. They then present resolutions to the relevant folks to help out the students at large. Student Voice meets regularly with the president, as well as represents the students at faculty meetings and other important committees. Student Voice meets every Thursday at 11:30 in the student lounge. All meetings are open to any student.

The Bear Gallery: This is our off campus student run gallery. The Bear is staffed by a small group of students who help to acquire empty spaces (usually commercial rental space), fix up the spaces, curate and host student shows, and educate students on this process. Any student who has interest in hosting their own show is encouraged to do as such. The Bear staff is there to help you through the process. The shows run from different themes to specific media. For more information on the Bear Gallery: http://beargallery.blogspot.com/

The Mighty Throwdown: This is our translation of an open mike coffee house but without the coffee house. Each month six “performers” play live “music” on a given theme. Each one has twenty minutes to entertain the audience. At the end of the evening the audience then picks a winner. The Throwdown champ then has to declare a theme for the following month and return to defend their title. This has become a regular institution within our school.

If you have any ideas that you would like to see happen you can contact anyone on Student Voice or drop by my office.
