Honorary Artist Eric Hopkins
Eric Hopkins has engaged numerous people through his art and with his thoughts and ideas about life on this Big Blue Planet. With broad strokes and bright colors, Eric captures the dynamic forces and patterns of nature in watercolors, oils, blown glass, and photography. Regardless of his chosen medium, Eric’s creative process relies on immediate inspiration, which transcends the specific and addresses a more abstract essence of his experiences. His vision focuses on the Big Picture—the natural world, geological and geographical forms, and the exchange of energy between Earth, Water, and Sky. From this intimate study of natural forces, Eric has developed a keen awareness of light and color, which is reflected in all of his work and particularly his recent work with molten glass.
Born in 1951 in Bangor, Maine, Eric is a native of North Haven Island, Maine, where he has maintained studios and a gallery on Hopkins Wharf since 1990. In the summer of 2006, Eric expanded his studio and gallery space to 21 Winter Street in Rockland, Maine.
Eric attended Montserrat College of Art and is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. He has taught at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Pilchuck Glass School. He has exhibited at the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Waterfall Arts Center, the University of Maine Museum of Art, and a number of galleries nationally. Eric’s paintings and glass are held in many private and public collections, including the Farnsworth Art Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, Wustum Museum of Fine Arts, and the U.S. Department of State Art in Embassies: Bahamas, Pakistan, Philippines, and the West Indies. He is also represented in the corporate collections of L.L. Bean, Johnson Wax, Sanyo Securities, and Idexx Laboratories.
