around town

Montserrat is located in Beverly, MA, an historic, seaside city with miles of beautiful coastline located approximately 20 miles north of Boston. Rich in history with a working waterfront and diverse neighborhoods, Beverly boasts multiple public beaches, parks, playgrounds, ponds, riverfront walkways, woods and trails. The city is home to several cultural institutions and now has an arts district which includes Montserrat College of Art, many local galleries and two theaters, one of which is home to a nationally recognized resident magic company and a movie theater, and the other, the North Shore Music Theatre, offering first-run musicals and performances and one of the largest non-profit professional theaters in New England.

Beverly’s downtown is thriving and active with a wide variety of restaurants and bistros for all tastes and pocketbooks, including many which offer an active music scene. The tree-lined downtown streets also include shops, boutiques and services businesses, a train station with half-hour service to Boston, the beautiful public library, and the Beverly Historical Society and Museum.

Montserrat College of Art’s campus is located within a block of the downtown, two blocks from Dane Street Beach and less than a mile from Lynch Park, once part of the property belonging to the summer White House of President William Taft.

Beverly’s proximity to Boston and its five commuter train stations provide easy and convenient access to several other major museums and galleries, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Arts and several others.

Founded in 1626, the City of Beverly is one of the oldest communities in the state. Residents describe their city as the birthplace of the United States Navy, noting that the first ship commissioned by the Navy and General George Washington first sailed from Beverly Harbor.

Located in northeastern Massachusetts, Beverly is 7 miles north of Lynn; 20 miles north of Boston; 88 miles south of Portland, Maine; and 238 miles from New York City.
