Grant Resources for Artists

Grant Writing Checklist
Some basic tips to help you get free cash. For assistance with any part of the process, come to the Writing Center.

  1. Chicken or the egg? Try to have a project idea in mind before you begin your search. This will help you stay focused on criteria, goals, and timelines.
  2. Research. Explore the web sites below for grant opportunities.
  3. Tailor your project. The more closely your project aligns with the grant council's mission, the more likely you are to receive funding. Pay attention to their criteria before you spend valuable time putting together your proposal.
  4. Work the bottom line. Create a budget that accurately reflects your needs. Most grant committees ask recipients to account for how they are spending every penny of their money.
  5. Professionalism = cash. Slides too dark? Misspellings on your application? Any minor transgressions show that you aren't worthy of their money. Be careful and detailed in all parts of your presentation.
  6. Make your deadline. There's no hope for you if your proposal arrives in pieces. Follow all the directions on entry forms (package your work securely, with appropriate postage for returns, if necessary), and make sure to send everything in on time.

Good luck!!
