
Study Art Abroad in Ghana 2011/2012
Students earn 3 credits in Art History during this study art abroad in Africa experience. The course, African Art in Africa, provides the opportunity to study African art in context. In-depth study of major art historical sites provides students with first-hand knowledge of the art and architecture of unique and fascinating cultures. The study art abroad in Africa course includes the study of textiles and decorative arts as well as architecture, painting and sculpture. The class format is a combination of lectures, field trips and visits to area museums.
The trip to Ghana focuses on studying the art and architecture of the Nankini, Ashante and Fante peoples of Ghana. After our arrival in Accra we head north to Sirigu a traditional Nankini village where women create spectacular painted houses and have established a non-profit community women's empowerment project that promotes traditional art forms. . We will travel along the magnificent coastline to Cape Coast fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site visiting numerous markets and finally the sculpture workshop where the famous fantasy coffins made by the Ga people.
