Art changes everything. At Montserrat College of Art, we live and breathe these words because they are the foundation on which our College was formed. Our founders were practicing artists inspired to create a school for the professional education and encouragement of emerging artists. These founders brought to Montserrat their love of the arts, their dedication to the vitality of teaching, and their commitment to combining the magic of life and art for individuals and the greater community. Such faith in the importance of lifelong involvement in the arts allows art and creativity to transform lives on every level.

With that in mind, our founders also understood the value of “real jobs for the real world,” and our varied curriculum and internship program reinforces that. This is a College with its roots in the special soil of a vision that is both idealistic and wisely practical.

Given this history, our College is known for the flourishing mentoring relationships between faculty and students. As a member of our community, students have amazing opportunities to work one-on-one with our teaching artists, to assist as peer mentors to one another, to connect with our thriving alumni, and to exhibit work in a variety of ways. Always, these connections allow students to take the creative risks which bring them to the cutting edge of their own talent and expertise. Montserrat College is located in a picturesque coastal community with theaters, a lively business community and many practicing artists. We are a quick train trip or drive to Boston and there is a fine museum in the next town. Nearby is one of the oldest artist colonies in the country, Rocky Neck. The ocean and a sandy beach are a three-minute walk. This is also a community which genuinely appreciates and welcomes our students as assets to the city, just as it values and appreciates the presence of our College for the passion and energy we bring.
